Located 45 minutes from the campsite, Figueres is a charming Spanish town with a very rich architectural heritage. It is also the birth place of Dali, so don't miss its museum!
The museum is the main attraction in Figueres and receives many visitors looking to view the works. It has been housed in the old municipal theatre since 1968, and is rather disconcerting. As requested by Dali, the visitor receives no explanation. The master defined it as follows: “This museum cannot be considered as a museum, it is a gigantic surreal object, where everything is coherent and where nothing escapes my understanding.
In the Dalinian Sistine Chapel, you will notice the visual effect of Lincoln's portrait, Gala's painting of the sea and Beethoven's portrait in octopus ink; the floor of the former theatre displays the rainy Cadillac. Stereoscopy allows you to see the paintings in perspective. The booklet on sale at the entrance helps guide you, but gives little explanation. The museum has recently incorporated the Torre Galatea, the painter's former home. It houses a collection of 39 jewels created by Dalí between 1941 and 1970 and a permanent exhibition of sketches and paintings which contributed to their creation.
